A garage cleanout plan that actually gets finished

August 25, 2026 / 5 min read

Garage cleanouts stall for one reason: people start in the middle of the pile and open every box. Work the perimeter in one direction instead and the whole thing takes an afternoon.

Keep four piles, not ten

  • Keep: things you have used in the last year.
  • Sell or give away: working items with real value.
  • Haul: broken, outgrown, or never going to be fixed.
  • Hazardous: paint, solvents, oil, batteries, propane.

That last pile matters. We do not haul hazardous material, and neither does the transfer station in a regular load. Yavapai County runs household hazardous waste collection events, so set those items aside and handle them separately.

Start early, it gets hot fast

From late spring through September, a west facing garage in Cottonwood or Camp Verde is unpleasant by mid morning. Start at 6am, get the sorting done before the sun turns the corner, and take the rest in the shade.

Stage the haul pile where a trailer can reach it

The single biggest thing you can do to keep a cleanout cheap is to move the haul pile to the driveway or just inside the garage door. If you cannot lift it, leave it, that is what we are for. Just tell us when you request a quote so we plan the time.

Do not re-shelve the junk

Once the haul pile leaves, put back only what belongs in a garage: tools, yard gear, sports equipment, seasonal storage. Anything that landed there because it had nowhere else to go is the reason you are doing this again in two years.
